Muzeji Ivana Meštrovića

Ivan Meštrović Museums are dedicated to research, preservation and promotion of the work and life of Ivan Meštrović (1883, Vrpolje, Croatia – 1962, South Bend, Indiana, USA), one of the most prominent Croatian artist of the first half of the 20th century. He expressed himself as a sculptor, painter, architect and writer. His sculpture is dominantly figurative and found its form in different materials such as plaster, stone, marble, wood and bronze. Ivan Meštrović gained international reputation and influenced generations of sculptors. He is present in museums and galleries all around the world as well as in many public spaces, where his public monuments even today astonish with their greatness. Owing to his donation of 1952, Ivan Meštrović Museums today span at four locations (Zagreb, Split and Otavice) where visitors have the opportunity to take pleasure in hundreds of his sculptures placed within impressive architecture.

Ivan Meštrović Museums have developed various programmes to enhance visitors’ experience:

  • Educational workshops within authentic setting among plaster originals introduce participants into the sculpture making process
  • Exhibition space complemented with video and multi-media screening set inside artist former studio
  • Exhibitions of upcoming and contemporary artists offering new perspective and different interpretation reveal current state of art
  • Educational tourist routes devoted to Meštrović’s public sculpture and relevant locations outside museum (e.g. In the native land of Ivan Meštrović)
  • Multi-media programmes which include different types of media into an innovative presentation of museum collection.

For our future work we are dedicated to sharing the knowledge and creating a unique experience for visitors which would include new technologies and multi-media, such as interactive panels, audio and video guides.
